this page features RC engines from both original and fisher-price ranges. i will use the misty island track for the fisher-price releases.
eventually i hope to also feature the talking/face changing engines.

R/C engines

the RC engines come with a simple controller. originally, thomas, percy, james and stanley came with 2 wagons, while molly only had one. later releases of the original 4 also came with only 1 wagon. thomas was also included in the large original tidmouth sheds set and had face changing abilities.
the fisher-price engines appear to only come with the tenders, which are attached to the engines by wiring. i can see many being broken by young hands. the batteries go in the tender.

talking engines

the talking engines originally came with special track to enable face changing.
the original talking engines were james, thomas and hiro. each said phrases from 'hero of the rails" and came with 2 extra truck loads.

fisher-price talking engines

i recommend opening and testing these before giving them to a child. i have had 2 that were faulty and had to be replaced. both times, they spoke fine, but when placed on a track, they didnt move as expected. not much fun having a train that chuffs while sitting still. its a shame that fisher-price cant keep on top of their quality control. UPDATE: it appears fisher-price have remedied this. when i deboxed flynn, i noted they have used twine to secure him and made appropriate holes in the wheels to thread it through. previously, they used plastic twist ties and had them wound around the rear axles and through the body. i think this was the cause of some being faulty and needing to be replaced.

so far they have released thomas, percy, james, salty, gordon, diesel, flynn and henry
they chuff as they go around the track and when you pick them up they make a sound like steam releasing. very cute. they all say a number of phrases.  flynn has a constant "railway noise" track playing, which is kinda cool.

unlike the tomy ones, they dont play the theme song constantly, which is great!

3 speed remote control engines

$50AUD each from TRU. they have steam patterns on their sides and the remote has 3 speed settings as well as reverse. i will investigate whether i can customise one with a front coupler, so he can pull a load backwards.
the tenders and wagons are attached with wiring, as expected.
